My friend Bitterroot died Thursday morning, surrounded by her family. She was, at various times in my life, an employer, a mentor, an inspiration--and always, a friend. Thanks to her efforts, millions of people around the world with kidney disease have a better quality of life, and are living longer. I was privileged to be a small part of that effort, but what I will remember even more is the timeless beauty captured in the photographs on her blog. She was able to find meaning and wonder in the fallen leaves, the tiniest flower, the rays of sunshine bursting through the clouds after a storm.
For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind
and to melt into the sun?
And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath
from its restless tides, that it may rise
and expand and seek God unencumbered?
Only when you drink from the river of silence
shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top,
then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs,
then shall you truly dance.

Thank you for sharing about your friend and in turn blessing me as I visited her blogspot and saw such beauty through her camera lens. I hope others will take the moment to share her beautiful life. -- Jody Neufeld
